The 8-day Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek via Poon Hill is a fantastic adventure that combines two popular routes, Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp, into one unforgettable experience. This trek offers the best of both worlds: enjoy breathtaking sunrise views from Poon Hill at a lower elevation, then explore the stunning high-altitude landscapes of the Annapurna Sanctuary.
Along the way, you’ll see a variety of incredible natural features, including glacial moraines, icefalls, and towering snow-capped peaks. The route also takes you through traditional villages, giving you the chance to experience the rich culture and daily life of local Gurung and Magar communities.

ABC Trek Via Poon Hill is a more popular hike in the Annapurna Region. The Annapurna Base Camp Territory is located within the innermost and largest Annapurna Conservation Area Project, and the entire massif of the Annapurna Himalayas, including its surrounding areas, is protected within a 7,629-square-kilometre (2,946 sq mi) area. It has 13 peaks over 7,000 meters, including Annapurna I, which stands over 8,000 meters.

ABC Trekking territory with Indigenous ethnic groups inhabiting villages of Ghorepani, Ghandruk, Chhomrong, and Landruk. The diversity of this region is through the many castes, Ghale, Gurung, Magar, Thakali, and Tamang, which present an incomparable and natural blend of culture and linguistics. Indigenous Peoples and Minority peoples live across the mountains; They live in as many as 27 of the total 75 districts. Most indigenous people live in the remote mountain areas of rural villages and are involved in agriculture for survival.
Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons for the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek. October, November, and September are autumnal months. Meanwhile, spring spans from March through May, characterized by a moderate amount of sunshine and relatively low precipitation.
Additionally, beautiful mountain views are available here. For those undeterred by winter (December, January, and February), 8-day Poon Hill to Annapurna Base Camp treks are also possible, albeit requiring appropriate clothing for the cold and snow. Similarly, you can complete the Annapurna Base Camp Poon Hill trek in the summer months (June, July, and August) with suitable gear and careful planning.
The Annapurna Base Camp Via Poon Hill Trek, 8 to 10 days in Nepal, Difficulty is moderate. Poon Hill trek leads to Annapurna Base Camp, the Annapurna Trek. This trek covers 115 kilometers in total. The altitude gain will be gradual, making the trek relatively easy. The trail takes the form of steep stairs when reaching places such as Poon Hill and Ulleri. Because of the numerous uphills, the trek can be strenuous at times. ABC Trek Via Poon Hill will be quite worthwhile if you prepare for it about 2-3 months in advance. Running, jogging, swimming, cycling, or even hiking for a day or two might be part of the preparation.

Your trek begins with a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the official starting point of the Annapurna region treks. From here, the trail follows the Modi Khola Valley, passing through the checkpoint at Birethanti and continuing through terraced farmland, small villages, and suspension bridges.
The route gradually ascends to Tikhedhunga, and for stronger trekkers, continues steeply via a long stone staircase to Ulleri, a traditional Magar village perched dramatically on the hillside. This section offers your first close views of the Annapurna foothills.
Trek duration: 5–6 hours | Overnight stay at a lodge in Ulleri or Tikhedhunga
After breakfast, begin a steady ascent through dense rhododendron and oak forests within the Annapurna Conservation Area. The trail is peaceful, rich in birdlife, and shaded for most of the way. You will pass through Banthanti and Nangethanti, small resting points used by trekkers for lunch and tea breaks.
As you climb higher, glimpses of snow-capped peaks begin to appear. By late afternoon, you reach Ghorepani, a vibrant mountain village known for its warm hospitality and panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.

Wake up early for a pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m), one of Nepal’s most famous viewpoints. From the summit, watch a breathtaking sunrise illuminate the Himalayan giants—Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri.
After returning to Ghorepani for breakfast, continue your trek through beautiful rhododendron forests and ridgelines. The trail includes gentle ascents and descents before reaching Tadapani, a peaceful forest settlement offering stunning sunset views over Machhapuchhre.
Trek duration: 6–7 hours (including Poon Hill hike)
Today’s trail descends steeply through dense oak, bamboo, and rhododendron forests to Kimrong Khola, followed by a challenging uphill climb to Chhomrong. Along the way, you pass small Gurung settlements and farmland terraces carved into steep hillsides.
Chhomrong is a beautiful gateway village to the Annapurna Sanctuary, offering close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South.
Trek duration: 5–6 hours | Overnight stay at a lodge in Chhomrong
Begin the day with a steep descent to Chhomrong Khola, followed by a long ascent via stone steps to Sinuwa. The trail then enters dense bamboo and rhododendron forest, creating a peaceful and shaded trekking environment.
Passing Bamboo and Dovan, the valley narrows as you continue upward along the Modi Khola gorge. By afternoon, you reach Himalaya, a small cluster of lodges surrounded by dramatic cliffs and forested slopes.
Trek duration: 6–7 hours
Today is the highlight of the trek. The trail climbs steadily past Hinku Cave and Deurali, where the landscape becomes increasingly alpine and dramatic. Continue to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m), surrounded by towering peaks and glacier views.
From here, enter the Annapurna Sanctuary—a natural amphitheater encircled by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. Reaching Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) is a truly unforgettable moment, with 360-degree Himalayan views.

Wake early to witness sunrise over the Annapurna massif, where golden light slowly touches the snow-covered peaks. After breakfast, begin your descent retracing the same scenic route through Machhapuchhre Base Camp, Deurali, and Dovan.
The downhill walk is easier and allows you to enjoy the changing vegetation and river valley scenery. By late afternoon, reach Bamboo, a quiet settlement inside the forest.
Trek duration: 6–7 hours
Continue descending through Sinuwa and Chhomrong, then follow the steep trail down to Jhinu Danda. Here, you can optionally relax in the natural hot springs near the Modi Khola riverbank.
From Jhinu, take a shared jeep back to Pokhara, marking the end of your Annapurna Base Camp journey.
