Gorilla Trek begins at Beni Bazar in the Rukum district, located in far-western Nepal. This region is home to a diverse mix of ethnic communities, including Dalits, Brahmins, Gurungs, Chhetris, Newars, and Magars. The trek culminates in Sulphur, after approximately 17 days of walking through pristine wilderness. The trail meanders through the Dhorpatan Wildlife Reserve, offering access to both the Rukum and Rolpa districts. Along the way, you’ll be treated to a visual feast of natural wonders, including the majestic Dhaulagiri mountain range to the east, and the imposing Api Himal and Saipal Peak to the west.

Your Gorilla Trek adventure commences with a three- to four-hour drive from Pokhara to Beni. This drive takes you along a scenic highway, passing through the picturesque town of Nayapul, which serves as a popular starting and finishing point for other famous treks, such as the Annapurna Base Camp, Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, Ghandruk, and Khopra Danda. Nayapul’s strategic location makes it a convenient gateway to the region.
Beni itself is nestled at the confluence of the Kaligandaki River, a mighty river originating from the upper Mustang region. The town is situated in the Myagdi district and is connected by road, making it one of the busiest corridors due to its proximity to Muktinath, a significant Hindu pilgrimage site. However, instead of staying in Beni, an adventurous option is to continue 25 kilometers further on a rugged road to Darbang where you can find lodging for the night.
During your trek, you’ll have the opportunity to visit Takam village, a historically significant place in the Myagdi district. This village holds the remnants of medieval warfare, including an ancient war trench, attesting to its rich history. Takam is not only a historical site but also an archaeological and religious one. The village offers panoramic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mukut Himal, providing a stunning backdrop to your journey. The community in Takam is a melting pot of diverse ethnicities, including Magar, Gurung, Brahman, Chhetri, Damai, Kami, Sarki, Thakali, Chantal, and more. The majority of residents are Brahmans and Chhetris, but the village embraces a mosaic of cultures, making it a fascinating stop along your trek. From Takam, you can also access Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Dhorpatan, opening up additional trekking opportunities.
Gorilla Trek is a unique blend of camping and tea-house trekking. While you’ll find accommodations in villages for most of the journey, there will be nights when you won’t have access to villages. Particularly in the Gujar Ghat and Jaljala areas. During these nights, you’ll need to carry camping gear and provisions.
