Trekking is essentially day hiking and doesn't require any special training. However, good physical condition, a love of walking, and a desire to enjoy mountain views and village life are essential.
These treks are suitable for walkers looking for something more challenging and energetic. Hill-walking experience is desirable, with longer days and higher elevations.
Since the terrain can be hard and the days long, hikers should be in good physical condition and have previous mountain walking experience. High passes and extended trekking days may be involved.

The Nepal Winter Trek is a delightful journey through the lower-altitude regions of the Annapurna territory, designed for those who want to experience trekking in Nepal during the cold season without the extreme challenges of high-altitude routes. Unlike famous trails such as the Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, or the Annapurna Circuit Trek, which are often inaccessible or highly challenging in the winter months due to heavy snowfall and freezing conditions, this trek focuses on the scenic lower Annapurna foothills.
The beauty of the Nepal Winter Trek lies in its timing. From December to February, the lower Annapurna hills transform into a winter wonderland. Villages like Dhampus, Tolkha, and Ghandruk are often sprinkled with light snow, while majestic Himalayan giants such as Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) sparkle brilliantly against the clear winter skies. With fewer trekkers on the trail, you’ll enjoy peaceful paths, authentic cultural encounters, and warm teahouse hospitality.
The Nepal Winter Trek is relatively moderate, but trekkers should still be prepared for trekking on snow and icy trails above 2,800m (especially between Tadapani and Ghorepani). These sections can be slippery due to frozen paths, so carrying microspikes or crampons is highly recommended.
While not as extreme as treks to Annapurna Base Camp in winter, trekkers should still pack warm layers, a quality down jacket, and a sleeping bag rated for –15°C to –20°C.
Packing the right gear makes a huge difference in comfort and safety:
The Nepal Winter Trek is organized by Nepal Wilderness Trekking Pvt. Ltd., a trusted local company with highly experienced government-licensed guides and strong porters. Our team members are natives of the Annapurna region, offering not just navigation and safety but also cultural insights that enrich your journey.
If you’re seeking alternatives, these are some of the best winter treks in Nepal:
December is one of the best months for the Nepal Winter Trek. Clear skies, fewer crowds, and a touch of snow on the trails make it a magical time to hike, and almost every day, I have to hike on the snow.
The Poon Hill trek in winter is especially rewarding, with mesmerizing sunrise views over snow-draped peaks.
The Nepal Winter Trek is one of the most rewarding adventures for travelers seeking a trek in the snow in Nepal. It combines the charm of snow-covered trails, stunning Himalayan views, and authentic cultural encounters with the comfort of moderate altitudes and cozy teahouses. Whether you’re standing at Poon Hill at sunrise or soaking in a hot spring after a chilly day’s hike, this trek offers an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
With proper preparation, warm clothing, and expert guidance from Nepal Wilderness Trekking Pvt. Ltd., your Annapurna Winter Trek will be safe, memorable, and filled with breathtaking moments.
