Trekking is essentially day hiking and doesn't require any special training. However, good physical condition, a love of walking, and a desire to enjoy mountain views and village life are essential.
These treks are suitable for walkers looking for something more challenging and energetic. Hill-walking experience is desirable, with longer days and higher elevations.
Since the terrain can be hard and the days long, hikers should be in good physical condition and have previous mountain walking experience. High passes and extended trekking days may be involved.

The Pikey Peak Trek, one of the best sunrise and sunset viewpoints without heavy crowds, is a hidden gem in Nepal’s lower Everest region. Pikey Peak (4,065 m) has become a renowned trekking destination for its panoramic Himalayan vistas and unique low-altitude charm. Pikey Peak at 4065m is a particularly beautiful viewpoint, a favourite of Edmund Hillary, with a panorama that includes Mount. Everest (Sagarmatha), Lhotse, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, and Kanchenjunga.” In fact, Sir Edmund Hillary himself famously declared the view from Pikey Peak to be among the greatest in Nepal; it is often called “Hillary’s favorite Everest view. Known for breathtaking Himalayan views and rich Sherpa culture, this trek offers an authentic and peaceful adventure far from the crowded trails.
Lower Khumbu’s 8-day Pikey Peak Trek adventure is perfect for trekkers seeking natural beauty, cultural immersion, and fewer altitude risks compared to higher routes. Unlike the busy EBC route, the Pikey trek, short (4-8 days), low-altitude, offers a quieter, more intimate trekking experience rich with culture and natural beauty. The short Pikey trek starts with a road drive (no risky Lukla flight), and to avoid the long distance drive on the way back, the flight can be scheduled from Phaplu. It can be noted that Pikey Peak will be “the new Poon Hill trek” because of its easy access and spectacular eight-thousand-meter mountain view. In comparison to the crowded Everest Base Camp (EBC) trail, the Pikey Peak Lower Khumbu trek offers unbroken views of distant peaks, with only prayer flags and stone monuments in sight, with the hill surrounded by all sides.
The name Pikey (also spelled Peekey) refers to the Sherpa deity Pikey Hlapchen Karbu (or Chaybo Pikey), a local Sherpa deity, who is traditionally worshipped by villagers here. A local Sherpa believes that Pikey is their protector. So the Sherpa people raise prayer flags and make offerings every year on the full moon in July as the god of Pikey watches the skies and blesses the rains. The deity is believed to control the region’s weather. Locals offer yak butter lamps and juniper incense at the summit to honor this spirit. In poetic terms, the name is said to mean “clear sky above nature”, reflecting the peak’s expansive sky views and spiritual connection with the land.
At every turn of the trail, there are signs of Sherpa culture, old gompas, mani-walls, and fluttering prayer flags reminding trekkers that this landscape is as sacred as it is scenic.
Unlike the more commercialized and heavily trafficked Everest Base Camp trek, the Pikey Peak Trek offers a peaceful and authentic Himalayan experience. This off-the-beaten-path adventure follows remote trails that were once used by Sir Edmund Hillary during his early explorations of the region. Far from the crowds, the route offers a deep dive into the cultural and natural beauty of the lower Solukhumbu region.
As you make your way through the trail, you’ll pass through untouched Sherpa villages where traditional lifestyles are still preserved. These charming mountain settlements offer warm hospitality and a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Sherpa people, who have lived in harmony with the harsh Himalayan environment for generations.
The trek also takes you through lush rhododendron and pine forests, vibrant with birdsong and wildlife, especially in the spring when the hills burst into color with blooming flowers. Along the way, you’ll encounter ancient Buddhist monasteries (gompas) perched on quiet ridges, spinning prayer wheels, and fluttering prayer flags that add spiritual depth to the journey.
Pikey Peak Trek adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap (also known as Hile), known as the “Switzerland of Nepal” for its rolling green meadows, crisp mountain air, and expansive views of the Himalayas. The drive itself, taking approximately 7 to 9 hours, takes you through the terraced farmlands, small towns, and winding mountain roads of Nepal’s mid-hill region.
Upon reaching Dhap (2,900 meters), you’ll start your trek. The trail from Dhap ascends gradually along peaceful ridgelines, with the majestic peaks of Everest, Numbur, and Thamserku slowly emerging on the horizon.
The next stop is the quiet village of Jhapre (2,820 meters), perched above a deep valley with magnificent views of the Everest range. Jhapre is a culturally rich settlement, home to a small Buddhist monastery and decorated with fluttering prayer flags.
From Jhapre, the trail gradually climbs to the base of Pikey Peak, often considered one of the best viewpoints in Nepal. The path is scenic and peaceful, winding through yak pastures and alpine meadows. After a night at Pikey Base Camp (around 3,640 meters), you’ll make an early morning ascent to the summit of Pikey Peak (4,065 meters). For the top sunrise with a magical moment.
This day head towards Junbesi (2,700 meters), one of the most charming and culturally important Sherpa villages in the lower Everest region. Junbesi is home to Thubten Chöling Monastery, a large Buddhist monastery founded in the 1960s by Trulsik Rinpoche.
The trail then continues through more peaceful terrain, passing traditional farms, mani walls, and ancient chortens as you make your way to Phaplu (2,413 meters). Phaplu is a well-connected village with a small airstrip.
Both seasons offer stable weather and excellent trekking conditions. This trek is also achievable in a 4-day itinerary for those with limited time.
Bring a warm sleeping bag, especially in colder months.
Beyond the views, the Pikey Peak trek holds deep spiritual value. The trek visits sacred sites and ancient monasteries, including Thupten Chhoeling, where you can witness Buddhist rituals and monk life.
